The runoff scheme in the land-surface/atmosphere model has been one of the simplest parts, although it plays key role in the interactive landsurface-atmosphere system. The runoff generation mechanism in the Biosphere-Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (BATS) has been improved in the regional climate model (RegCM_NCC). The difference between the modified and the original runoff scheme in BATS is characterized that the former includes two surface runoff generation mechanisms (Philips and Horton) simultaneously.
The abnormal heavy rainfall process in summer 1998 has simulated with the RegCM_NCC by using the two runoff schemes. Primary results have shown that the model with the modified runoff scheme can effectively change the fraction of runoff in the water cycle partition. That is, the simulated runoff has been increased, correspondingly the water partition into evaporation and soil moisture are decreased, so the surface temperature and sensible heat are increased. The change in the land-surface also affects the circulation over middle-lower troposphere layer, the highest layer of temperature change is 700hPa. With these modifications, the simulated precipitation is decreased compared with the original over-estimated precipitation. So the performance is improved to reproduce the precipitation and monsoonal circulation over troposphere.
