Inter-comparison between fast response instruments over the intensive turbulent observation : Activities of "Flux Enthusiasts Party"

A careful intensive turbulent observation was carried out for the comparison of turbulence instruments capable of measuring fluctuations of wind,temperature and scalar quantities with different measurement principles over a grass field in Tsukuba,Japan in May 2000 and May
2001.The motivation of the experiment was to assess the likely difference of the turbulence statistics obtainable from these turbulent sensors.This should contribute to solve the so- called imbalance problem of surface energy.This presentation will focus on the initial results of the inter- comparison of these instruments,in particular,of optical fast response sensors such as the open path gas analyzer for measuring the water vapour and/or carbon dioxide.
From the observational results during May 2000,the turbulence statistics (averaging, variance,and co- variance which represents the multiplication between vertical wind velocity and scalar quantities with sonic anemometer- thermometer and so on)obtained by 5 fast response sensors ((a) AH300 produced by KAIJO Inc.;(b) OP2 by Data Design Group; (c) LI7500 by LICOR Inc.;(d) E-009B by ADVANET Inc.; (e) KH- 20 by Campbell Sci., Inc.) were examined,and a good agreement of their statistics was obtained between (b)and (c)for the data obtained under clear sky conditions.In contrast,the raw data obtained by (d)have shown
many spikes because of drift behaviors and weak weatherproofness so that the statistic values turned out not very reliable.However,more thorough analysis will be needed with these data and for other sensors.Additional observation was simultaneously made of spatial distribution of soil moisture and radiative temperature within the footprint area of the instruments,and the discussion will be made of the relationships between the flux measurement and the land surface condition at scale of 10^2 m.
