Intensively observation on water and enery balance of the tropical monsoon forest has been conducted under GAME-Tropics project in Kog Ma Experimental Watershed situated near Chiang Mai, northern Thailand in order to improve understanding in the interrelation of vegetation and topographic on water and energy balance of hill evergreen forest. A distributed phisically based model entitled “Distributed Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation Model (DHSVM)” has been modified to provide an integrated representation of hydrology-soil-vegetation dynamics at the topographic scale described by digital elevation data. It includes two-layer canopy model for intercepiton, evaporation, transpiration and energy balance model, and runoff generation via the saturation excess mechanisms. Canopy evaporation is represented via a two-layer Penman-Monteith formulation that incorporates local net solar radiation, surface meteorology, soil characteristics and moisture status, and species-dependent leaf area index and stomatal resistance. Digital elevation data are used to model topographic controls on incoming solar radiation, air temperature, precipitation, and downslope water movement. At each time step the model provides a simultaneous solution to the energy and water balance equations for every grid cell in the watershed. Individual grid cells are hydrologically linked through a quasi three-dimension saturated subsurface transport scheme. The model has been applied at a 10 m scale to experimental watershed range in elevation from 1,300-1,600 m. The catchment area is 0.64 km2 and is covered by hill evergreen forest. Various hydro-meteorological data that have been collected since 1997 are used to verify the model.
