Multiple scales of spatial heterogeneity are characteristic of arctic tundra landscapes. Tundra surface comprises a variation in elevation, geomorphology and a mosaic of distinct vegetation types occuring on scales of 100 m to 1 km or so with different combination of radiative, thermal, hydrological and aerodynamical properties. Each heterogeneity type is characterised by individual energy balance. Multiple scales of energy balances determine the spatial variability of surface temperature. In this paper we adress the following question: how can variation in elevation and the different tundra vegetation types be characterzed with respect of subgrid-scale variability in surface temperatures. Aerial observations of surface temperature using helicopter were made in May 28, June 1, 4, July 6, 13, 21, 1999 and May 19, 26, June 5, 2000 near Tiksi at the south-east on the mouth of the Lena river for the following purposes: (1) to obtain the range of scales of of surface temperature; (2) to obtain the scales of the spatial heterogeneity of tundra. Two nested waterheds (T-river, 5.5 km2 and S-river, 40 km2) have been selected for this investigation. Specification of the instrument for measuring of surface temperature: wafe length - 8-14 (m, field view 2 deg., accuracy - 1 (C, scanning time - 0.25 sec. Spatial spectra of surface are calculated for each observation day. The forms of spatial spectra are analyzed. The characteristic properties of the observed spectra of surface temperature are obtained. The relation between the scales of the vatiability of the surface temperature and spatial heterogeneity scales of tundra surface are analyzed.
