The organization process of meso-scale disturbances is quite
interesting to study. It is, however, quite difficult to observe all
life stages of meso-scale disturbances, because they usually move very
fast. During GAME/HUBEXf98 IOP, two meso-vortices (about 200 km in
horizontal scale) developed and decayed within the coverage of Fuyang
Radar (500 km in diameter). The radar coverage was fully surrounded by
special upper air sounding stations. By making use of the radar, the
radio sonde and GMS data, we studied the precipitation efficiency and
the organization process of two meso-vortices. It is quite interesting
that the time lag between the peaks of water vapor flux and
precipitation was 12 hours. Small convective clouds began to develop
about 6 hours after the increment of water vapor flux and then began to
organize into the meso-scale disturbance. Considering this time lag,
the precipitation efficiency of the meso-scale cloud systems was about
50 ? 70 %.
We also tried to simulate these vortices by making use of Japan
Spectrum Model and a Cloud Resolving Modelto study the effect of land
surface processes on the development of disturbances.
