This study defined a new index to measure East Asian monsoon based on the result of analysis of special climatic characteristics around East Asian region. Compared with other indices, the new index is basically satisfied with the optimal principles for monsoon indices proposed by Lau et al. We summarized the results as follows: (1) the index could display the south-north distribution of East Asian monsoon activity (2) the index could better describe Meiyu / Baiu phenomenon especially the Meiyu rain belt around Yangtze river (3) In high index years, an anomalous blocking anticyclone tends to occur in the northeast Asia, meanwhile subtropical high of the western North Pacific extends abnormally westward and vice versa (4) the index is well correlated with the preceding ENSO events.
Key words: East Asian monsoon, Meiyu, Monsoon index
